Soaring Eagles….Imagine the Possibilities
Soaring Students 1. Congratulations to Rebecca Arroyo, Alfredo Cruz, Kiarah Lazo, Juan Torres, and Elizabeth Alvarado for participating in this year’s 2010 All-City Art Competition – Portfolio Review. As a result of their excellent portfolio review, they have received admission and scholarships to Illinois Institute of Art and/or Robert Morris College.
In order to participate, each CPS senior was asked to submit a complete portfolio containing between 12 – 20 artworks along with their All-City Scholarship Application (designating college choices), Artist Statement, Portfolio Inventory Forms and their ACT scores or transcripts.
2. Congratulations to student Nelly Jimenez. She is a finalist for the 2010-2011 Hispanic Scholarship Fund General Scholarship.
3. Congratulations to the Gates Scholarship finalists: Maria Razo, Roberto Aguillon, and Miguel Gonzalez.
4. Congratulations Sandra Ortega for being selected as the top semifinalist in the 2010 State of Illinois (the IJAS) Science Fair Essay Competition. Sandra developed this year’s title, The Science of Toys in unique and creative ways that captured the interest of the reader. She will be attending the Science Fair Awards Ceremony on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at the Museum of Science and Industry from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Sandra will be competing against students from Whitney Young, Curie, Chicago Ag and Bogan.
Universidad Para Padres: 5. The 1st session of our Spanish GED program began on Saturday, March 13th with 26 parents. Congratulations to the parents for proving that it is never too late…..
ACT Math Prep Class: 6. ACT math prep class every Monday, Thursday and Friday from 230-4 in room 303.
News and Events of the Week: 1. Monday - Thursday: Universidad Para Padres offers ESL I and II classes from 5 – 8 p.m. in rooms 230 and 221.
2. Tuesday: Universidad Para Padres offers Parenting classes from 5 – 7 p.m. in the library.
3. Monday - Wednesday: A reminder to those students who wish to take the ASVAB Career Exploration Program Exam, you must sign up before Tuesday, March 16th in the PERC with Ms. Cabrera. The Exam will take place at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 17th.
4. Thursday: FAFSA completion follow-up workshop for seniors. 5. Thursday: ILT meeting in 230 for the PD team and in room 311 for the Freshman team from 2:30 – 3:30. 6. Friday: The Battle of the Books competition takes place this Friday. 7. Friday: Benito Juarez Birthday Celebration. 8. Friday: LSC meeting in the upper patio at 4:30 pm. 9. Soaring Students: Golden Apple Scholars Program: 1.Student Darlene Bueno has been selected to be among the 100 members of the Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois Class of 2010. The Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois is a highly competitive program that seeks the best and brightest of Illinois youth interested in a teaching career. Darlene will receive advanced teachers preparation through summer Institutes and exposure to the art of teaching and financial assistance for college. 2.Students Maria Razo and Tracy Garcia have been admitted to U of I.
Music Program: 3.Congratulations to the students from Intermediate and Advanced band. They participated in the Chicago Public High School Instrumental Solo & Ensemble Contest which was held on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at Kelly High School. They all received medal awards for their performance.

Universidad Para Padres: 4.The second session of our ESL program begins on Monday, March 8th. 27 parents will begin ESL I and 25 parents will start ESL II.
8th Grade Registration: 5.On Saturday, March 6, Eighty three 8th graders were registered and their families enrolled. The families were interviewed and enrolled by administration and registered by the counselors. Juarez students led each family on a tour of the building. Thank you to all the teachers, counselors, students, and staff for making the event such a great success.
ACT Math Prep Class: 6.ACT math prep class every Monday, Thursday and Friday from 230-4 in room 303.
LSC Congress: 7.On Saturday, March 6 Juarez hosted principals and LSC members of Pilsen elementary schools. Elementary CAO Jennifer Cheatham and high school CAO AKeshia Craven joined us for a discussion on educational issues facing the students in Pilsen. Thank you to the Juarez LSC for taking the lead and making the event successful.
Washington D.C. 8.Last weekend, ten Juarez students traveled to Washington, D.C. as part of their AP Government classes. Students held a community forum in February and brought the issues discussed there to the offices of congressman, Luis Gutierrez and senator, Dick Durbin. Students discussed issues concerning immigration, education, and the economy while acting as lobbyists for the Pilsen community. The students also toured the capital and visited many museums and government offices. Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO): 1. It is with great pleasure and pride that I share with you the great news that the Chicago Symphony Orchestra announced last week in a press conference that the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, led by Mexican Conductor, Carlos Miguel Prieto, will perform on Mexican Independence Day, Thursday September 16, 2010 at the New Performing Arts Center at Benito Juarez Community Academy.
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is considered the greatest of all the U.S. orchestras and among the top 3 orchestras in the world (along with the Berlin & Vienna Philharmonics). This is an historic moment and will be even more so as the sound of the mighty CSO is heard at Benito Juarez Community Academy!!!
Soaring Students: 2. Erica Sosa, Karina Aranda, Belen Garcia, and Violeta Alvarado have been accepted to Universidad de Sagrado Corazon (Sacred Heart University) in San Juan, Puerto Rico. They have full financial support and will join Juarez alumnus, Maria Arrendondo, who is currently first in her class at Sacred Heart University. 3. Shoujun Deng has been admitted to the University of Illinois and is a finalist for the Chez Family Scholarship worth up to $10,000. 4. Cesar Estrada has also been accepted to University of Illinois.
Regional Science Bowl: 5. Students from the Juarez chapter of SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) competed in this year’s regional Science Bowl. 19 teams competed for an opportunity to compete in the nationals in Washington D.C.
The Juarez team placed 2nd overall. Mother McCauly came in 1st place and Evanston Township in 3rd place.
Debate: 6. The debate team participated in the AA conference Championships this weekend. The Juarez debate team won 5 awards. The awards we won are as follows: Julia Ortega won the 3rd place Speaker Award for the Junior Varsity Division Mario Miramontes won the 6th place Speaker Award for the Junior Varsity Division Shabaka Verna won the 5th place Speaker Award for the Varsity Division Julia Ortega and Tracy Garcia won 5th place overall in the Junior Varsity Division Andrea Medina and Shabaka Verna won 5th place overall in the Varsity Division
International Night: 7. International Night was a tremendous success. We are pleased to announce that our event drew over 850 people. The event highlighted music, fun facts, food, and games from around the world. Thank you to all the teachers and students for making the event such a wonderful success.
Universidad Para Padres: 8. Registration for the new semester was last Tuesday. Juarez and Malcolm X registered a total of 47 students for GED classes, ESL classes and computer classes.
Library Media Center: 9. Author Claudia Gray (Evernight series) will visit our school on March 9th. She will meet with the Book Club during 10/11th periods in the library. Battle of the Books preliminary rounds will take place on March 19th at Whitney Young from 12:30 - 4:30.

1. Soaring Students: The US Hispanic Leadership Institute national conference took place this past week. Students Yolanda Gallo and Luis Arellano attended and each received a scholarship for $1,000.0 Congratulations to Yolanda and Luis.
2. Saturday Program: Our Saturday Freshman program started this past Saturday. Our goal is to work with struggling freshman in a smaller setting to get them back on track. If you have or know a freshman who is struggling and could benefit from a smaller setting, please refer him/her to the counselors.
3. Universidad Para Padres: Registration for the new semester is this Tuesday. Juarez and Malcolm X will be registering students for GED classes, ESL classes and computer classes. Parents will need to bring a picture ID and proof of address in order to register. Registration will take place in the library from 5-7 p.m.

1. Soaring Students The students listed below have been selected to participate in the Spring Break College Tours. Congratulations to the soaring students. They will be visiting schools in Illinois, the Midwest, and the east coast. Stephon Alexander Allison, Juan Guillermo Cabrera, Ricardo J Del Real, Cinthia Garcia, Cristal Garcia, StephanieGuereca, Ivan Huerta, Jovana Ibarra, Alyssa Lopez, Nicole Maldonaldo, Abigail Mendiola, Stephanie Molina, Karen Morales, and Julia Ortega.
2. Navistar Trip The Juarez SHPE (society of Hispanic professional engineers) students visited Navistar on President's Day. They toured the manufacturing floor, learning about the history of Navistar, and visited multi-million dollar test labs. The plant manager, Ron Poland, led the tour and gave students an in-depth look at engineering. During lunch several engineers representing various fields answered students’ questions and advised them on careers in engineering.
3. Peer Mentoring Program 32 juniors and seniors are part of the Juarez peer mentoring program. The goal of the program is to partner the peer mentors with a freshman division. The peer mentors will work with the freshmen students and offer advice about the challenges of school and make suggestions about how to succeed at Juarez. These students have been trained by DePaul University and the program is an initiative of the Freshman team.
4. Saturday School Saturday, February 20 is the start of the Juarez Saturday program. The Saturday program is a great opportunity for freshmen students to recover credits and to get back on track through a unique counseling component.
